Why every review here links out

We do not host reviews about ourselves. Everything on this page is reproduced word for word from our public Google profile and links back to it, so you can see the account it came from, read what else that person has reviewed, and satisfy yourself that a real household wrote it about a real job.

That matters more than it sounds. A quote set in italics on a builder’s homepage costs nothing to invent, and nobody can check it. A review on a public profile is attached to a person, can be replied to, and can be reported if it is not genuine. If a firm shows you praise but not where the praise came from, that is worth noticing.

We ask every client for a review once the job is finished, whether or not the build ran smoothly. We would rather the record was complete than flattering, because a page of unbroken praise reads as curated and a mixed page reads as true.

What is worth looking for, in ours or anybody’s

Most reviews of builders say the team was polite and the work was to a high standard. That is pleasant and tells you almost nothing. The useful ones have something specific in them:

• The actual work. A review that names what was built — a side return, a loft with two bathrooms, a whole house taken back to brick — was written by somebody who had it done.
• A problem, and what happened next. Every build on an old house turns something up. A review that describes how that was handled is worth more than one that implies nothing ever went wrong.
• Communication. Whether the client knew what was happening and when is the thing people most often regret afterwards, and the thing they most often mention.
• The end of the job. Snagging, certification and the closing stretch of a build are where firms quietly start turning up less often. Reviews that mention the finish are describing the part that is hardest to fake.
